risky business

I hate buying clothes without trying them on first (this is why I have not taken to online shopping) because invariably, it ends badly for me - it's too small, too big, too short, too sheer, just plain unflattering. So it was quite a "hold your breath" moment when I tried on a dress I bought at a wholesalers market in Bangkok (as a rule, wholesalers there refuse to let anyone try anything on) after I got back to my hotel room.

Here's me trying the dress on again after I got back home -

I didn't expect it to be so billowy - there's a whole of lot fabric I didn't bargain for, and it didn't look that tent-like when I saw it on the mannequin (and it wasn't pinned or anything). I can't decide if I can pull it off - the view for my is particularly disturbing from the back...I can't tell if it borders on infantile, though my friend has assured me that it does not and I am simply being paranoid.

I don't know whether I would have bought it if I had tried it on first; I usually decide whether to buy on the spot and rarely return for a second try, and I think any hesitation I felt would have resulted in me not buying the dress.

But my friend thinks I am simply not used to a wide silhouette and that once my eyes adjust to the shape, I'd take to it. I have to say though, it's is incredibly comfortable to be wearing something this roomy, so maybe it's not a bad thing...

That's exactly the reason I never buy anything online. I'm just to worried about all the things that can go wrong! Having said that, I think this dress looks lovely on your shape. Because it fits so well in the shoulders, the billowy bottom is kept in check. And you can always wear it with a cute belt or cardi, if you want to tighten it up. K

i agree! i hate the disappointment of trying on something after buying it, only to realize that you've made a big mistake...
on the contrary, though, i think the dress suits you quite nicely! :]

Yep, I figured since I already have it, I might as well make the most of it and give it a chance first. :)

You scored. You look fantastic, and no, it's not infantile. I can see why you'd worry about that, because I would worry about the same exact thing. However, I worry because I see myself in narrow shapes, so I dress myself in narrow shapes. I think we all have to try new shapes every now and then, and glean some joy from a happy accident. That's what I think this is: a happy accident. I hope you'll keep the dress, and show us what you do with it.
