roll me one

Maya Villiger for Turned Out

For as long as I can remember, I have been rolling up my shirt sleeves. I can’t do a proper cuffs-fastened-at-the-wrist look, it does something to the proportions of my body that makes me look ungainly. I look like I was forced to dress up.

In any case, I’ve become very fond of the rolled sleeve. It suits my casual style, it makes me look like I mean business (like brunch, you know, deadly stuff), it’s also quite convenient not to worry about getting food on it. I push up my sleeves when I'm wearing a sweater too. Naturally, I really heart this post on Turned Out embracing the joys of a rolled sleeve.

I like it best with the cuff just below my elbow so that I can comfortably bend my arms, but the just above-wrist roll is also quite nice - a more demure, elegant look.

With me, the neat, chic, pulled-together look just isn’t meant to be.

I loved this picture too. And also the unironedness of the shirt!

I actually think rolled-up sleeves can look rather elegant. Depends on the general look of the shirt, I love to roll up my french-cuffed Oxford shirts, show a little bit of wrist. Plus it works well with a bracelet-sleeved jacket.

I am so agreeing with you! I feel too "uptight" when I haven´t rolled my sleeves up.

I love this photo. I always roll my sleeves up when I wear a shirt, and with t-shirts most times too. I feel uncomfortable when I don't.

Most of my button downs are pretty relaxed, so if I did button up the cuffs, it would just look weird. However, I "fold" my sleeves up neatly rather than roll them. Not sure if that negates the casual-ness of the outfit. I just like to fold it up 3/4 of the way, so it's easier for me to look at my watch. Haha.

A: Yes, love any excuse to not iron!

t: agree!

Pret a Porter P: There's a first time for everything :)

Ammu: I think it has its own elegance, but it's definitely different from ladylike elegance of a properly fastened cuff at the wrist.

Alice, J: I know, it makes me feel so stiff!

Amanda: I fold it up neatly for work too, ahaha.

I've acquired that rolling sleeves trait when I was living in Africa. Rolling even short sleeves tee... Now it's an automatism!

I agree with Ammu! And I know what you mean when you say that it looks like you're forced to dress up.. i feel the same way too!

I couldn't have said it better! I roll up every single long sleeve, not only shirts. That's the way I feel comfortable, it just feels like me!

Aissa, anna: Sometimes I think my cuffs would look nice buttoned, but nope, not working on me!

Fleurette: Yep, better to look comfortable, more elegant that way.

I roll up sleeves all the time - shirt, jacket sleeves, everything! Actually, I feel weird if I don't! :)

This image is so you:) I think there’s something inherently elegant about wearing and knowing what works for you and being comfortable.

I agree with Ammu rolled up sleeves are so elegant. The touch of wrist is sort of like the ankle for me; I like that it's discrete but still a bit sensual.

me too! i love this photo - and i've always rolled up long sleeves on buttondowns, shirts and sweaters. i also cuff the sleeves on my blazers too, unless it's a very formal suit or tux jacket for evening. there's just something so easy and a flash of wrist (and a watch, or some jewelry) is as perfect as a flash of ankle for a simply chic look.

This is a really thoughtful post. I never even thought twice about how I never wear a buttoned shirt without rolling up the sleeves. Thinking about the different lengths is always a tricky decision but the picture does make it look effortlessly elegant.
