Note to self: Start them young. Such a lovely, practical, evergreen outfit that spans generations.

Happy weekend!

I was daydreaming about my future children the other day (I am always daydreaming about something or other), and was thinking about how I would get them initiated on style, fashion, etc. and the little breton shirts I'd buy them. But then it occurred to me that, as they are children, they would grow to hate breton shirts and--just to piss me off--buy lots of clothes that I wouldn't like and etc. I think I might be reading a little too much of myself into my hypothetical children, but I do wonder if it's better to let kids find their own style and method of consumerism or try to indoctrinate them while they're still young? I really feel like the whole minimalism thing wouldn't fly with a kid in middle school given all the pressure to be that kid with the shiny new thing--but, at the same time, I also don't want to be the parent that buys her kids really expensive things even though the things could be used for a lifetime. Haha...thank god I've still got a long time to go before I ever become a parent!

0000: I read this comment by Sofia Coppola about how she was trying not to dress her daughter in navy because she was at the age where she's into pink and glitter and princesses. I don't think we should try to mould kids into mini versions of ourselves, and impose our tastes on them. I want my children to have minds of their own. But that said, I will draw the line at some point if something is too gaudy and tacky and too "adult" looking - I know I won't be able to help myself, and parents are meant to set boundaries at some point anyway.

Btw, I wanted to say that I have been thoroughly enjoying your China posts, but my rather vigilant anti-virus software forbids me to leave comments on your blog.

Really? Does it give a reason for why it won't let you comment?

Lindsay K: Me too! I've always loved to dress myself as a kid, and always took a strong interest in it, even though the result is sometimes disastrous.

0000: It just says it detected that it's a malicious website and I'm strongly advised not to enter - which is a stronger warning than the usual ones I'm prompted to. Not sure why....
