excursion to the theatre

I went to catch Kevin Spacey in "Richard III" yesterday evening. For the first couple of scenes, it was watching something in a foreign language - my brain could not compute Shakespearean, and I'd never read the play. Once I got used to it though, I thoroughly enjoyed myself - it was an electric, vigorous performance (I really liked Haydn Gwynne's performance as Queen Elizabeth), the gaunt, arresting, set design, the coherent direction (Sam Mendes) that made the play easy to follow for strangers to the story like me.

I had thought of putting on a dress (oh, the poor neglected creatures in my closet) but in the end I stuck to the cream silk shirt I already had on (which tends to billow at the back like pajamas), dark jeans, and leopard loafers.

A glimpse of my outfit, as I sat on the bus, sleepy and hungry.

I was wide awake after the play though. I'm not a big watcher of plays, but there's something very intense about watching people throw themselves into a character right in front of you, and sometimes you leave with a little bit of them inside, which is unsettling.

Oh, I liked Richard III - I've seen all the Henry plays and I think Richard III is the best. My only pet peeve about watching plays and seating right at the front is that a lot of times, you get spit on and sometimes they engage the crowd which I have no patience for!

amanda: haha, I know, i never buy front row seats for that very reason! sometimes you also miss out on the set design and end up craning your neck when you're too close to the stage.

pret a porter p, justeileen: Thanks! I don't have a better picture I'm afraid...

miss sophie: I know, I felt silly checking out Zara went I was in Europe because it can be bought in Singapore, but prices are significantly higher, esp with the weak euro and USD.

I too saw this production, I go to see a lot of Shakespeare, and it always takes me a few minutes to get use to the language. I love the rhythm, so even if I am struggling with the meaning it is always wonderful to hear. Spacey is brilliant in this I was thrilled to see such a succinct production. Mendes always interprets Shakespeare brilliantly.
I too often default to trousers yet I always feel so much more special wearing a dress!
I once bought a pair of jeans in Zara in Istanbul, I know I should have waited but for some reason enjoyed the experience more in another country!

I'm from Singapore too and I've been a silent reader of your blog for quite some time. I love your sartorial choices! You always manage to look pulled together without trying too hard.
Posting here because I'm wondering where you got your silk shirt from? I've been looking for a non sheer one for the longest time. Thanks!

indigo16: I agree about the rhythm, it carries me along even if I'm not too sure what was just said. I saw The Tempest last year, also directed by Sam Mendes, he has done a great job, I agree.

J: Thanks! The silk shirt is from Sykes Silks, which I bought on sale on ASOS last year. The material is great, not sheer at all, which as you rightly pointed out, is so hard to find. But the workmanship is unimpressive, so it's not really worth the price. I have a navy silk shirt from Massimo Dutti that I love, I think they have a cream version this season, and it looks all right on the hanger, not sure whether it's sheer on...
