those unforgettable first few lines...
"When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I survived at all. It was of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood."
-- From Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt, 1930 - 2009
It was the first book I'd ever read that took me from laughing out loud on a train to trying not to let the tears welling up in my eyes to spill over in a matter of minutes; it was heartbreaking and funny all at once and it was above all, more then reminiscence and hindsight, it was wonderful writing too.
